We stand on the shoulders of giants. I reminded Mr. Harry Belafonte today how committed we are to continuing his legacy & the work of the black led civil rights movement. The seeds he planted are budding, the flowers blooming and we will see them through until they are oak trees rooted deep into the ground. We love you Mr. B and you can count us to put it all on the line like you have done for us. I tell him we are gonna win, he said "you better." ❤️✊🏽 #BlackLivesMatter#nyjusticeleague#resistance#history
Was reading about this man, Daniel Sickles (October 20, 1819 – May 3, 1914), and controversy surrounding his life and career. He was quite the eclectic: 1) Had a prostitute, Fanny White, as his mistress, 2) was a Murderer of suspected wife's lover (acquited on the grounds of temporary insanity), 3) was a Major General, Union Army (disobeying Meade's command, abandoned Little Round Top, and took up lines on the other side of the Peach Orchard effectively opening the Union flank, where he evidently lost a leg to a cannon ball, but still claimed that his maneuver was the deciding factor at Gettysburg), 4) was a Lawyer (acquired land for Central Park), and 5) was a Politician (Minister of Spain, a NYC Sherrif, and Representative of 53'd Congress, at which he was thought to have been an embezzler from the Monuments Commission, and he also was intrumental in making Gettysburg a National Park). When asked why there was no memorial to him at Gettysburg, Sickles supposedly said, "The entire battlefield is a memorial to Dan Sickles." He apperently donated hisamputated right leg to the Army Medical College in Washington, D.C. He reportedly visited the shattered bones annually, on the anniversary of his wounding.
